How does a small software company become more environmentally friendly?
Reduce |
100% online delivery of my software means zero manufacturing, packaging, or transportation impact. |
All Mac App Store payments are made electronically, eliminating paper checks and transportation costs. |
The Agenda, Archive, Finance, iKeeper and YENCO.COM apps reduce my need to keep track of stuff on paper. |
YENCO.COM runs entirely on Apple products. My current computers are the 21.5-inch iMac and 11-inch MacBook Air which meet Energy Star 5.2 requirements and achieved a gold rating from EPEAT. |
The power adapter on my current portable devices, the iPod Touch 4 and iPad 2, outperform the strictest global energy efficiency standards. |
As I work into the early morning hours on my software, my office is lit in two independently controlled zones with two floor lamps each (with each lamp using three highly energy efficient LED bulbs). A total of four lamps with 12 bulbs using up to 84 watts of electricty. |
Finally there is the impact of the materials the products I use are made from. The iMac, MacBook Air, iPod Touch, and iPad 2 have arsenic-free glass, mercury-free LED backlighting, and are all brominated flame retardant and PVC-free. The LED bulbs I use are made from non-toxic materials and are mercury-free. |

Reuse |
I try to limit the amount of paper being used, but sometimes it is necessary for me to print pages of code to go through. In such cases, the pages are not immediately thrown away. They are saved and the back side of each paper is used for notes, interface idea sketches, etc. |
As I upgrade to newer Apple products, I find a good home for the old products where they continue to serve a useful function. |
Recycle |
After printed pages have been reused as much as possible, they are shredded and put out for local recycling pickup. |
When the Apple products I use finally come to the end of their useful function, they are now made of highly recyclable materials such as aluminum, glass and stainless steel. |
